The fourth industrial revolution or Industry 4.0 is said to have begun in 2011 when one simple German project seamlessly meshed cyber-physical systems into cyber-physical production systems. Since then, gradually the manufacturing industry has become information-intensive, transforming into a digital environment that connects big data, processes, people, actionable data, and assets. This transformation has given birth to a smart industry that upholds innovation and collaboration.

To that end, the industries have clear frameworks to consolidate physical assets with digital technologies for a cyber-physical production system. The Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence (AI), network technologies, data communication, etc. plays a huge role in this framework. To help prepare the current and future generations to lead the way, the prestigious National University of Singapore is offering several Master’s Programmes that will be highly sought after in today’s Industry 4.0.

These courses are Master of Science (MSc) Maritime Technology and Management, Master of Computing, MSc Biomedical Engineering, and MSc in Computer Engineering. Meant for students with a computing, engineering, biomedical, and maritime degree, and for anyone working in the tech, biomedical, and maritime industries, these are interdisciplinary courses to meet the demand for multi-skilled workers today.

The MSc Computer Engineering degree is offered by the NUS College of Design and Engineering and will help learners gain complete knowledge and skills in the design and implementation of hardware, software, and firmware. This program is meant for learners who wish to specialize in computer engineering, and research. Through this program, learners can be a part of the global digitalization efforts, transforming business strategies onto digital platforms.

The programme offers two distinct pathways for students, where one can go for a general non-specialized route or specialize in digitalization and communication technologies, computing hardware infrastructure, and machine intelligence and applications.

Offered by NUS’ School of Computing, the Master of Computing programme helps learners develop their IT skills through four well-curated specializations and a general track, for non-computing students who wish to embark on an accelerated conversion to the computing field. The four specializations offered by this programme are computer science, information systems, info-comm security, and artificial intelligence (AI). Learners can experience challenging, comprehensive curricula, informed by the latest innovative research by leading academics, at one of the best computing schools in the world.

The MSc Biomedical Engineering program offered by the NUS College of Design and Engineering aims to nurture holistic engineers in healthcare technology development. With a growing demand for healthcare innovation in recent years as well as the projected long-term prominence of healthcare issues in our aging society, biomedical engineers play crucial roles in the expanding healthcare sector.

Intertwining the principles of biomedical sciences with engineering, this programme is designed to advance innovation in technologies and applications in healthcare. It gives learners a unique perspective on dealing with challenges in both engineering and biomedical fields. It further assists learners to gain holistic knowledge to combat future issues in healthcare and health tech.

Finally, the MSc Maritime Technology and Management is a programme jointly offered by the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Management (ISEM) and the Centre for Maritime Studies (CMS), NUS. This programme is designed to build skill sets in learners to help upgrade the port capabilities in Singapore and worldwide. They enable learners to work in aspects of port systems such as industrial systems development, big data analytics tools, and emerging port technologies (e.g., digitalization to train workers).

The programme aims to develop a strong maritime innovation ecosystem at local, regional, and global levels through a talented workforce of innovative players. This programme consists of a 15-week internship, a maritime team project, strong industry support, and job placement assistance.

NUS believes in nurturing innovative scholars, thought leaders, and game changers, building in them both disciplinary expertise and a broad interdisciplinary perspective. Their Master’s programmes are true examples of this vision.
